Right hand drive imports from Japan, titled in Washington.

Eagle Cars has been in the car business since 1997 and importing from Japan for the past eight years. We stock factory right-hand drive Toyotas, Subarus, Hondas and the occasional Mercedes-Benz — and we title every one of them in Washington State before it goes up for sale.

What we actually do

Vehicles built for the Japanese market have the steering wheel on the right, because Japan drives on the left. Once a vehicle is 25 years old it can be legally imported into the United States, which is why our inventory runs from the mid-nineties to the early two-thousands.

We buy those vehicles, bring them over, handle the import paperwork, and title them in Washington State before we offer them for sale. You are not buying a project or a customs headache. You are buying a titled, road-legal vehicle.

Nothing we sell is a conversion. A conversion moves the steering wheel to the right side of a car that was never built for it. Ours came off the assembly line that way.

Who buys these

Rural mail carriers

Carriers reach roadside mailboxes from the driver’s seat, which means the wheel needs to be on the right. We keep vans, wagons and SUVs suited to routes, and a number of our customers have found us through other carriers rather than through advertising.

Import buyers and enthusiasts

Land Cruisers, Hilux Surfs, Estimas, Foresters and the odd WRX STI. Buyers who want a vehicle that was never sold here, and who care about what the underside looks like as much as the paint.

Questions we get

Is a right hand drive vehicle legal in the United States?

Yes. There is no federal prohibition on driving a right-hand drive vehicle in the US, and vehicles at least 25 years old can be legally imported. Registration requirements are set state by state, so check with your own DMV before you buy — and ask us, because we have titled vehicles for buyers in a number of states.

Why are all your vehicles from the nineties?

Because that is what the law allows. A vehicle has to be 25 years old before it can be imported without meeting modern federal safety and emissions standards. That rolls forward every year, which is why our inventory sits in the 1996 to 2001 range.

Do you title the vehicles, or do I have to?

We title all of our vehicles in Washington State before offering them for sale. You are buying a titled vehicle, not an import in progress.

Can I buy from out of state?

Yes, and many of our customers do. Buyers have travelled here from Montana, Colorado and elsewhere to pick vehicles up, and we work with people who buy without seeing the vehicle in person first. Ask for additional photos or a walkaround video of anything you want to see.

Is this a conversion?

No. A conversion relocates the steering to the right side of a vehicle that was built left-hand drive. Everything we sell was manufactured right-hand drive in Japan, for the Japanese market.

Can I finance one?

Many lenders will not write a traditional auto loan against collateral this old, but our buyers have financed through credit unions and unsecured personal loans. We are not a lender and we do not take credit applications — see our financing page for the lenders our customers have used.

What if you do not have what I am looking for?

Tell us the year, model and budget. Sourcing vehicles to order from Japan is part of what we do.
