The Sprinter is a commercial van produced by Daimler that is the market leader in its segment in Europe, and is now sold in the U.S. as the Dodge Sprinter. Daimler describes the Sprinter as a vehicle that sets a new standard in the commercial vehicle market with a unique combination of fuel efficiency and functional interior design. Redesigned for 2007, the new Sprinter features a longer, wider, taller body with more cargo space. Two wheelbases are offered—144 inches or 170 inches. An extended version is also offered on the 170-inch wheelbase with a 15-inch longer rear overhang.

The 2008 Sprinter 2500 Van is a 3- or 4-door, up to 5-passenger full size van, available in two trims, the 144-in. WB and the 170-in. WB. Upon introduction, both trims are equipped with a standard 3.0-liter, V6, 154-horsepower, turbo, diesel engine. A 5-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The 2008 Sprinter 2500 Van is a carryover from 2007.

Engine Information

Turbo Diesel 3.0-Liter, 72 Degree V6, 24-Valve, DOHC, EFI Engine; Front/Longitudinal Mounted With Horsepower of 154@3400, Torque of 280@1200 and Alloy Block 3.5-Liter, V6 Engine.

The Sprinter Van was redesigned for 2007 and the 2008 Dodge Sprinter Van receives only minor changes including standard front swivel bucket seats and a standard four-seat rear bench. An electronic sliding door is available as an option.

Exterior

A large grille incorporates the Dodge Ram logo. Sprinters ride on one of two wheelbases, 144 or 170 inches, and are 233, 273 or 289 inches long overall. The back doors open to the vehicle's full height and swing open 270 degrees. One-touch, triple-flash turn signals and wide-angle mirrors are standard. An electronic sliding door is new for both the cargo and passenger van for 2008. The passenger van now includes an emergency exit window. Sprinters have an independent front suspension, rear leaf springs and power rack-and-pinion steering.

Interior

Up to 12 occupants fit inside a passenger-carrying Sprinter. Two people sit up front and as many as three more rows of seats can be installed. A standard, removable four-seat rear bench is new for cargo vans. For 2008, all models can have swivel bucket seats in front. Sprinters have a flat cargo floor and tapered rear wheel housings. Cargo volume is 127 cubic feet, though overall cargo capacity can swell to 600 cubic feet in some models. Air conditioning is standard. Other features include a tilting and height-adjustable steering wheel, a CD player and power windows and locks.

Under the Hood

Two new engines were introduced for 2007: a 154-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 diesel and a 254-hp, 3.5-liter gasoline V-6.

Driving Impressions

When equipped with the 3.0-liter turbo diesel, the 2008 Dodge Sprinter is surprisingly capable. While acceleration is not lightning fast, it is strong and steady. The quiet and smooth diesel engine is fuel-efficient and its generous torque keeps the vehicle from getting bogged down, even when loaded with passengers or cargo. The Sprinter's steering is heavily weighted, but not to the point of being laborious. Despite its long chassis, the Sprinter possesses a tight turning radius and responds quickly to emergency maneuvers. The ride is also pleasant and the interior cabin exhibits few rattles, even over rough pavement.

Safety

All-disc antilock brakes are standard, as is an electronic stability system. The system adjusts for how the Sprinter is loaded and adjusts its inputs to compensate. Side-impact and side curtain airbags are also available.

Under the Hood

A standard 3.0-liter turbo diesel V6 provides modest horsepower but plenty of weight-moving torque. This engine may struggle somewhat under full load, but fuel economy figures in the low to mid-20s won't disappoint. Those seeking more horsepower can opt for the 3.5-liter V6, which pulls a bit stronger but also consumes much more fuel.

Dodge took a big risk shelving its traditional full-size van in favor of a European-inspired platform, but it appears American business has embraced the result. The Sprinter's innovative cargo area, fuel-efficient diesel and gasoline engines and numerous configurations make it the new darling of the delivery and transportation sector. The boxy Sprinter silhouette has even begun showing up in the lucrative RV arena. Fresh from a complete makeover last year, the 2008 Dodge Sprinter may be the best result from the now-terminated marriage between Mercedes-Benz and Chrysler.
About this Car
Dodge continues to grow the Sprinter, offering an additional 15-inch rear overhang on the 170-inch wheelbase model. An emergency exit window is added to 12-passenger models and a power sliding side door is available on passenger and cargo vans.
