The Dodge Ram 3500 is the one-ton heavy-duty Dodge pickup. The boldly styled Ram replaced the previous Dodge pickup in 1994 and for 1998 the Quad Cab was added. The Ram 1500 was redesigned for 2002 and the heavy-duty Ram was updated for 2003 with styling that distinguishes it from the light-duty truck.
The current Dodge Ram 3500 heavy-duty pickup is available in a variety of body style and trims configurations. A regular cab is the choices of body styles, while trim levels consist of the very basic ST, the volume-selling SLT (known as the SXT with the Regular Cab) and the luxurious Laramie.
The Ram 3500 pickups will follow their 1500 brother in getting a full makeover for the 2010 model year. For now, however, the Ram heavy-duty trucks are mostly carryovers from 2008.
The 2009 Dodge Ram 3500 features the 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel as standard for all trim levels, producing 650 lb-ft of torque and 350 horsepower. A limited slip rear axle is also standard and a 5-speed manual transmission is not available with the optional 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine. Remote start is available with the 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel.
Like other heavy-duty pickups, the Ram 3500 has a stiff ride that bounces passengers around. Choosing this heavy-duty work truck over the regular 1500 lets you opt for the 325-hp Cummins 5.9-liter turbo diesel six-cylinder engine. Chrysler's powerful 5.7-liter Hemi V8 is also available. The crew cab's rear seat is tight and upright.

Exterior

Heavy-duty trucks rarely get advanced safety features or additional airbag systems. The Ram 2500 and 3500 do offer an electronic stability system as an option on all models except the Power Wagon. A stability system is standard on Laramie models.

Driving Impressions
A strong, stiff frame and decently sorted suspension endow the Dodge Ram 3500 trucks with a good basic foundation. The cabin is comfortable and reasonably well isolated and, while the ride on certain road surfaces can get slightly choppy (particularly in an unlade 4x4 model), adding passengers or payload settles things down nicely and is a modest price to pay for the Ram's excellent all-around capabilities.
