The Dodge Ram is a new truck that incorporates Dodge's forward-thinking style and refinements to cosmetics and engineering. The Dodge Ram is a light-duty full-size pickup, a so-called half-ton truck, but this latest version lacks the 1500 badge of previous versions because the heavy-duty versions 3500 share little in appearance and running gear.

The Dodge Ram 3500 is the one-ton heavy-duty Dodge pickup. The boldly styled Ram replaced the previous Dodge pickup in 1994 and for 1998 the Quad Cab was added. The Ram 1500 was redesigned for 2002 and the heavy-duty Ram was updated for 2003 with styling that distinguishes it from the light-duty truck. The Dodge Ram 3500 offers bold styling, big power and many creature comforts, making it ideal for work and play.

The Ram 3500 provides something for everyone with the choice of two engines, three cab styles (regular, Quad and Mega cabs), two wheelbases, single or dual rear wheels and either 4x2 or 4x4 drive types. When properly equipped the Ram 3500 can tow up to 16,850 lbs. Available safety features include dual front airbags, curtain airbags, and stability control and anti-lock brakes. For 2009, the Ram 3500 adds a new SXT model.

The 2009 Dodge Ram 3500 features the 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel as standard for all trim levels, producing 650 lb-ft of torque and 350 horsepower. A limited slip rear axle is also standard and a 5-speed manual transmission is not available with the optional 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine. Remote start is available with the 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel.

A new truck coming for 2010, Dodge trimmed down the Ram's heavy-duty lineup for 2009. The Power Wagon is available only in Quad Cab. The Hemi has been upgraded to 383 horsepower and 400 pounds-feet of torque for 2009, but that engine is no longer offered in 3500 models. Like other heavy-duty pickups, the Ram 3500 has a stiff ride that bounces passengers around. Choosing this heavy-duty work truck over the regular 1500 lets you opt for the 325-hp Cummins 5.9-liter turbo diesel six-cylinder engine. Chrysler's powerful 5.7-liter Hemi V8 is also available. The crew cab's rear seat is tight and upright. Other changes include remote start available on diesel vehicles, limited-slip rear axle standard on 3500 models and larger front and rear brake rotors for all models.

Heavy-duty pickups are a special breed of hauler. These full-size leviathans are built to tote and transfer big-time payloads and pull trailers weighing in excess of 10,000 pounds. Chrysler's entrants into this segment, which includes competitors from Chevrolet, GMC and Ford, are the Dodge Ram 3500 pickups. Available in Regular, Quad or Mega Cab configurations, with rear- or four-wheel drive, short or standard bed lengths, shorter or longer wheelbases, single or dual rear wheels, multiple trim levels and HEMI V8 gasoline or Cummins Turbo Diesel power, these ultra-Rams offer everything the basic Ram 1500 pickup does while adding even greater all-around capability.

Exterior

This design has been around since 2003 and showcases the broad-shouldered look of the Ram's big-rig styling. The massive crosshair grille, creased hood, air dam and sculpted bumper increase the intimidation factor when viewed from the front.

Interior

The Mega Cab is huge. Lift up the second-row seat and there's 71 cubic feet of storage space. When folded down, the rear seat can recline up to 37 degrees for passenger comfort. The Quad Cab isn't quite as roomy as competing crew cabs, but it can be ordered with numerous creature comforts. The white-face gauges are easy to read and the controls are conveniently placed. Laramie models are spiced up with wood trim and leather upholstery.

Safety

Heavy-duty trucks rarely get advanced safety features or additional airbag systems. The Ram 3500 do offer an electronic stability system as an option on all models except the Power Wagon. A stability system is standard on Laramie models.
