The Dodge Ram 3500 is the one-ton heavy-duty Dodge pickup. The boldly styled Ram replaced the previous Dodge pickup in 1994 and for 1998 the Quad Cab was added. The Ram 1500 was redesigned for 2002 and the heavy-duty Ram was updated for 2003 with styling that distinguishes it from the light-duty truck.
The 2009 Dodge Ram is a new truck that incorporates Dodge's forward-thinking style and refinements to cosmetics and engineering. The Dodge Ram is a light-duty full-size pickup, a so-called half-ton truck, but this latest version lacks the 1500 badge of previous versions because the heavy-duty versions (2500, 3500) share little in appearance and running gear.
The 2009 Dodge Ram comes in six trim levels: ST, SLT, Sport, TRX, R/T, and Laramie. Special edition models, such as Big Horn and Lone Star, are regional offerings and primarily cosmetic or packaging changes. Since it is new and visibly different from the 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty models, the '09 Ram light-duty does not yet have the 1500 label. Cab choices include a Regular Cab with short (6.3 feet) or long (8 feet) bed, four-door Quad Cab with short bed, and the new Crew Cab with the shorter yet Rambo 5-foot, 7-inch bed.
The 2009 Dodge Ram HD heavy-duty line benefits from mechanical improvements, a more powerful Hemi engine, and a more extensive options list. Choice has been simplified by offering the Power Wagon only as a Quad Cab, the Ram 3500 only as a diesel, and the Hemi V8 only with an automatic transmission.
For 2009, Dodge Ram heavy-duty line gets a new model, the SXT which slots between the ST and SLT lines. Also updated are wood grain trim (dark maple burl), electric-switch 4WD on SLT and higher trim, tire pressure monitors on single-rear wheel models, and a slight increase in maximum weight for the largest models.

Driving Impressions
A strong, stiff frame and decently sorted suspension endow the Dodge Ram 3500 trucks with a good basic foundation. The cabin is comfortable and reasonably well isolated.
