The 2009 Dodge Ram is a new truck that incorporates Dodge's forward-thinking style and refinements to cosmetics and engineering. The Dodge Ram is a light-duty full-size pickup, a so-called half-ton truck, but this latest version lacks the 1500 badge of previous versions because the heavy-duty versions (2500, 3500) share little in appearance and running gear.

The 2009 Dodge Ram comes in six trim levels: ST, SLT, Sport, TRX, R/T, and Laramie. Special edition models, such as Big Horn and Lone Star, are regional offerings and primarily cosmetic or packaging changes. Since it is new and visibly different from the 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty models, the '09 Ram light-duty does not yet have the 1500 label. Cab choices include a Regular Cab with short (6.3 feet) or long (8 feet) bed, four-door Quad Cab with short bed, and the new Crew Cab with the shorter yet Rambo 5-foot, 7-inch bed.

A V6 and four-speed automatic are standard on 2WD regular and Quad Cabs, the 4.7-liter V8 and five-speed automatic on virtually everything else. The 5.7-liter V8 Hemi is offered across the board. No manual transmissions are offered.

All 3500 models come standard with the newly upgraded 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 gas engine. The popular 6.7-liter Cummins six-cylinder turbo diesel is optional in all in 3500 trucks. The 3500 Quad and Mega cabs can be ordered as single rear wheel or dual rear wheel. Four trim levels are available: ST, SXT, SLT and Laramie.

Heavy-duty pickups are a special breed of hauler. These full-size leviathans are built to tote and transfer big-time payloads and pull trailers weighing in excess of 10,000 pounds. Chrysler's entrants into this segment, which includes competitors from Chevrolet, GMC and Ford, are the Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups. Available in Regular, Quad or Mega Cab configurations, with rear- or four-wheel drive, short or standard bed lengths, shorter or longer wheelbases, single or dual rear wheels, multiple trim levels and HEMI V8 gasoline or Cummins Turbo Diesel power.

Exterior

This design has been around since 2003 and showcases the broad-shouldered look of the Ram's big-rig styling. The massive crosshair grille, creased hood, air dam and sculpted bumper increase the intimidation factor when viewed from the front.

Interior

The Quad Cab isn't quite as roomy as competing crew cabs, but it can be ordered with numerous creature comforts. The white-face gauges are easy to read and the controls are conveniently placed.

Safety

Heavy-duty trucks rarely get advanced safety features or additional airbag systems. The Ram 3500 does offer an electronic stability system as an option on all models except the Power Wagon.

Driving Impressions

A strong, stiff frame and decently sorted suspension endow the Dodge Ram 3500 trucks with a good basic foundation. The cabin is comfortable and reasonably well isolated and, while the ride on certain road surfaces can get slightly choppy (particularly in an unlade 4x4 model), adding passengers or payload settles things down nicely and is a modest price to pay for the Ram's excellent all-around capabilities.

Under the Hood

The Dodge Ram 3500 trucks offer two different engines for two different kinds of customers. Each delivers outstanding performance and is available with a choice of transmissions. The 5.7-liter HEMI V8 makes 355 horsepower and 395 pound-feet of torque. But even with Chrysler's efficiency-enhancing Multi-Displacement System, that can deactivate four cylinders under light-load cruising conditions; real-world mpg will still peak in the mid-teens with either the six-speed manual transmission or the available five-speed automatic.
