Dodge calls the Ram Mega Cab model the longest-cab pickup truck ever. Measuring 111.1 inches long, the cab offers 71 cubic feet of cargo volume (7.6 cubic feet behind the rear seat). Dodge also claims the Ram Mega Cab has, at 44.2 inches, the most second-row legroom in its class. Built on a 160.5-inch wheelbase, the Mega Cab model stretches to 247.7 inches long overall. Either the 345-hp Hemi V-8 or the turbo-diesel engine can be installed. Cloth seats are covered with YES Essentials stain-, odor- and static-resistant seat fabric and a remote starter is optional.
Ram 3500 power trains are similar to the 2500 series, which means buyers have a choice of a 330-hp, 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 or an optional Cummins 6.7-liter turbo-diesel inline-six. Regular-cab Ram 3500 models have dual rear wheels, but Quad Cab pickups can have single or dual rear wheels. The SXT model is new for 2008 and includes chrome bumpers, speed control, keyless entry and power locks, windows and mirrors.
The Dodge Ram 3500 is the one-ton heavy-duty Dodge pickup. The boldly styled Ram replaced the previous Dodge pickup in 1994 and for 1998 the Quad Cab was added. The Ram 1500 was redesigned for 2002 and the heavy-duty Ram was updated for 2003 with styling that distinguishes it from the light-duty truck.
The 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 adds the SXT trim level. The Laramie receives Dark Maple Burl wood grain accents, electric-shift transfer case is standard on SLT 4X4 and Laramie 4X4 and a tire pressure monitoring system is standard on all Ram 3500s with a GVWR of less than 10,000 lbs.
The Dodge Ram HD Mega Cab is designed to be the flagship of the heavy haulers. The Ram Quad Cab may be big, but the Mega Cab is bigger. It has the power and weight to tow heavy loads for long distances. And there is comfort for passengers in the process. For better ride and handling, the 2WD 1500 Mega Cab will be the choice. For best control handling heavy loads, the 3500 dually 2WD with Cummins would do the job. For heavy hauling and accessing rough terrain when you get there, the 4x4 regular or Quad Cab 3500 single-rear wheel would be just the ticket.
The current generation of Dodge Ram heavy-duty pickups has been with us for a few years now. Last redesigned for 2003, the Dodge Ram 3500 models aren't nearly as new as the latest from Ford and General Motors. However, they do benefit from constant updating, such as the addition last year of a 2010-compliant diesel engine and six-speed automatic.

Chrysler's entrants in this segment, which includes competitors from Chevrolet, GMC and Ford, are the Dodge 3500 pickups. Available in Mega Cab configurations, with rear- or four-wheel drive, short or standard bed lengths, shorter or longer wheelbases, single or dual rear wheels, multiple trim levels and HEMI V8 gasoline or Cummins Turbo Diesel power, these ultra-Rams offer everything the basic Ram 1500 pickup does while adding even greater all-around capability.
Driving Impressions
A strong, stiff frame and decently sorted suspension endow the Dodge Ram 3500 trucks with a good basic foundation. The cabin is comfortable and reasonably well isolated and while the ride on certain road surfaces can get slightly choppy (particularly in an unlade 4x4 model), adding passengers or payload settles things down nicely and is a modest price to pay for the Ram's excellent all-around capabilities.
