The Nitro has all the Dodge character. It feels bigger than its size, thanks largely to a high beltline, high seating position and much glass instead of sheet metal at the rear corners. It is not easy to make an SUV look distinctive and the Nitro tries very hard. Mechanically, it is hindered by the 3.7-liter engine and four-speed automatic transmission in the SXT and the most popular models. The SXT has a more powerful and smoother 4.0-liter engine, which gets about the same gas mileage at the 3.7, along with a good five-speed automatic transmission. It also has a more comfortable ride.
The ’09 Dodge Nitro models have received several updates to make the car more comfortable and to give owners a few small cosmetic items of use. The ’09 Nitro models all come standards with floor mats, unlike with previous models. They also come standard with a useful rear dome lamp and an auto unlock feature that allows anyone in the vehicle to exit more easily.
The ’09 models SXT has been replaced this year by the SE. The SXT model us a new trim style for the Nitro. It comes with a 4-liter, V6 engine standard as well as a 5-speed transmission with overdrive. The SXT trim comes with heated outside mirrors, extra moldings and later, 20-inch chrome wheels. The SXT trim come with either four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive.
