2009 Dodge Journey R/T AWD sport utility vehicle 5-door automatic

2009 Dodge Journey R/T AWD sport utility vehicle 5-door automatic

Dodge's 2009 Journey is a bizarre SUV. There is nothing wrong with it really. It is large, affordable and comes in an array of trim levels and prices, along with a choice of four- and six-cylinder engines and either front- or all-wheel drive. It can also be equipped with an optional third row of seats.

The Dodge Journey is available with a V6 engine that delivers adequate power but is far from the best in the class. The V6, which is standard in all but the base model, offers plenty of power for around town, a 3500-pound towing capacity and decent passing punch. Unfortunately, it is neither as refined nor as powerful as the newer V6s offered by several competitors. The base four-cylinder engine is coarse and offers too little power for a vehicle of this size.

The 2009 Journey is a 4-door, up to 7-passenger sport-utility, available in 5 trims, ranging from the SE to the RT AWD.Upon introduction, the SE is equipped with a standard 2.4-liter, I4, 173-horsepower engine that achieves 19-mpg in the city and 25-mpg on the highway. A 4-Speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The RT AWD is equipped with a standard 3.5-liter, V6, 235-horsepower engine that achieves 15-mpg in the city and 22-mpg on the highway. A 6-Speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The 2009 Journey is all new for 2009.

Highs: Attractive exterior design that is unmistakably Dodge, plenty of clever interior features, solid safety credentials, priced to sell.
Lows: Snug third row seat, tepid performance with four-cylinder engine and four-speed automatic.

Dodge's first car-based SUV uses the Chrysler Sebring/Dodge Avenger platform. A compact vehicle offers a third-row seat. Standard seating is for five passengers and the third row increases seating to seven. The noisy 2.4-liter engine is standard, but the punchier and refined 3.5-liter V6 engine is fairly quiet and responsive. Our tested V6 returned just 16 mpg overall, however. The ride is a bit unsettled and handling lacks agility, but it is ultimately secure. Storage bins under the front-passenger seat cushion and in the second row floor are handy. Also available are integrated child booster seats.

According To KBB Editors'

Based on the same D-segment platform as the Avenger, the 2009 Dodge Journey is a new crossover utility vehicle that fits in between the compact Caliber and family-hauling Grand Caravan. The Journey provides the utility of an SUV, the passenger capacity of a minivan, the driving characteristics of a car and has a multitude of storage bins and spaces. Making its debut into the crossover marketplace, the Journey compares favorably with the Chevy Equinox, Ford Escape, Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota RAV4, and it's especially ideal for those with families, or those looking to start new families, as it offers different trim levels with a choice of seating configurations and amenities that should suit a variety of needs and budgets.

Driving Impressions

The 2009 Dodge Journey indeed drives like a car, but with the comfort and space of an SUV. On our test drive, its tall ride height did not affect stability much as the suspension had a good amount of firmness to handle corners but was still comfortable, as compared to the rugged stiffness of the Ford Escape. The four-cylinder engine was peppy and had enough power to get us up moderate inclines, but the V6 seemed to be a better fit, although not as powerful as the V6 in the Toyota RAV4. We also appreciated all the convenient storage spaces. The Chill Zone beverage cooler above the glove box kept drinks cold surprisingly well, and the second-row in-floor bins, that were holding snacks, didn't leak a single drop of melted ice-water during a two-hour drive along bumpy back roads.
