The Grand Caravan is Dodge’s minivan that is now offered exclusively in extended form. When the original Caravan went on sale in the fall of 1983 along with the Plymouth Voyager, it created a completely new market segment and introduced the term minivan to the market. For 2008, the name was change to Grand Caravan. Dodge gave the Grand Caravan a total makeover with all-new designs for the exterior and interior, more than 35 new or improved features and more power train options. The wheelbase is two inches longer than the previous model and the ride and handling have been improve.

2009 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN CARGO VAN: Designed for commercial use, the '09 Dodge Grand Caravan cargo van is a “gradable” solution that provides an optimum balance of utility, functionality and visibility for small business and commercial needs. Power is provided by an efficient 3.3-liter V-6 with flex-fuel capability mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. This power train delivers 175 horses and 205 pound -feet of torque, as well as 17 miles per gallon (mpg) city and 24 mpg highway. The Grand Caravan cargo vans provide 143.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity, 58.9 cubic feet of front compartment volume, maximum Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 6,050 lbs., Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of 7,000 lbs., payload capacity of 1,500 lbs. and impressive towing capacity of 1,800 lbs.

Although it's been overshadowed by the SUV as the symbol for family transport in third-millennium America, large numbers of families still opt for the arguably more functional minivan. Chrysler is widely credited with inventing the modern minivan and is now the only domestic manufacturer left in the game, as GM and Ford have effectively replaced their slow-selling minivans with three-row crossover SUVs. For the 2009 model year, the Dodge Grand Caravan and its slightly ritzier Chrysler Town & Country sibling, arrive with attractive seating and entertainment options to compete with the remaining minivans from Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Hyundai and Kea.

Overall, the Grand Caravan is a disappointment. The rear coil springs improved ride comfort, but the rear can become buoyant on the highway. Vague and imprecise steering requires constant small corrections. The 3.8- and 4.0-liter V6 engines are a bit noisy and are not very fuel-efficient. Both are mat to a responsive six-speed automatic. Standard safety gear includes curtain air bags and electronic stability control. The flat-folding second- and third-row seats are still available. The swiveling second-row captain's chairs come with a small table but make legroom and third-row access tight. The optional touch screen stereo is overcomplicated. Reliability of the redesign has been well below average.
