2009 Dodge Durango 4-door SE 4x4 Sport Utility

The Durango is Dodge’s midsize SUV that was add for the 1998 model year. The Durango features third-row seating and interior volume that is equal to some full-size SUVs. The second-generation Durango debuted as a 2004 model with distinctive Dodge styling. For 2007 the Durango receive an all-new, bolder and more powerful design along with a host of new convenience features and an optional flex-fuel version of the 4.7-liter V8 engine was added.

The 2009 Durango is a 4-door, up to 8-passenger sport-utility, available in six trims, ranging from the SE 4X2 to the Limited 4X4. Upon introduction, the SE 4X2 is equipped with a standard 3.7-liter, V6, 210-horsepower engine that achieves 14-mpg in the city and 20-mpg on the highway. A 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The Limited 4X4 is equipped with a standard 4.7-liter, V8, 303-horsepower, flexible fuel engine that achieves 13-mpg in the city and 18-mpg on the highway. A 5-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The 2009 Durango is a carryover from 2008.

Despite the growing popularity of crossover utility vehicles, or cubs, for those with serious towing and hauling needs there are few substitutes for a full-blown, body-on-frame SUV. Among the more notable is the 2009 Dodge Durango, a seven-passenger muscle machine with a rugged and distinctive style, a plush interior and the option of a HEMI V8 under the hood. Although not as large as a Chevrolet Suburban, the Durango has grown large enough to compete head-on with such competitors as the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition. Dodge's MDS (Multiple-Displacement System) technology helps save some gas, and a new hybrid-model goes even further. Alternative fuel fans will be sad to learn the 4.7-liter Flex-Fuel V8 has been drop.

The Durango straddles the midsized and large SUV classes. It is a body-on-frame SUV with a high towing capacity. Handling is clumsy but secure, and the ride is compliant but somewhat unsettled. The cabin is quiet, but the engine is a bit noisy. The optional 5.7-liter Hemi V8 is responsive, but fuel economy is poor at 13 mpg overall. Towing capacity is the Durango's forte. The third-row seat is relatively usable. Fit and finish is unimpressive. A hybrid version debuted for the 2009 model year, but is discontinue. Stability control and curtain air bags are standard.

Driving Impressions

On the road, the Durango delivers a noticeably smoother ride than several others do in the class. The quiet interior is free from the intrusive wind and tire noise of the first generation. The steering is impressive for a vehicle of this size, with good response and feedback that allow the driver to make exact lane changes and easily negotiate tight turns. Power for the base Durango is supplied by a sturdy 3.7-liter V6, with the 4.7-liter Magnum and the mighty 5.7-liter HEMI V8s as options. The base Durango is rear-wheel drive and offers the option of on-demand four-wheel drive but only when equipped with the 4.7-liter V8; V8-powered Durango’s have a tow/haul transmission setting that reduces gear searching by remaining in a lower gear for better pulling power.
