The Dodge Dakota is a mid-size pickup that provides nearly full-size truck power and capability. It is the only truck in its class to offer a V8 engine.
The Dakota is available with the choice of two engines (3.7-liter V6 or 4.7-liter V8), three transmissions, two body styles (extended cab), and two drive types (2WD or 4WD) and four trim levels. The 3.7-liter V6 produces 210 horsepower, while the E85-compatible 4.7L V8 makes 302 horsepower. Front airbags and rear-wheel anti-lock brakes are standard, while side-curtain airbags and four-wheel anti-lock brakes are optional. Available sound system features include satellite radio, infotainment system with navigation. A remote start system and Uconnect wireless connectivity are available.
The Dakota was given an all-new look inside and out in 2008, and remains unchanged for 2009. The model line-up was simplified by eliminating SXT, SLT and Sport trims.
The 2009 Dakota Extended Cab 4x4 is a 4-door, up to 5-passenger compact pickup, available in 3 trims, ranging from the ST to the LARAMIE. Upon introduction, the ST is equipped with a standard 3.7-liter, V6, 210-horsepower engine that achieves 16-mpg in the city and 20-mpg on the highway. A 6-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard and a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is optional. The LARAMIE is equipped with a standard 3.7-liter, V6, 210-horsepower engine that achieves 15-mpg in the city and 20-mpg on the highway. A 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The 2009 Dakota Extended Cab 4x4 is a carryover from 2008.

Fresh from a complete remake last year, the mid-size Dodge Dakota can no longer be tagged as a "mini-Ram". Dakota buyers disdain today's bulked-up full-sized pickups and demand a leaner exterior. With little compromise in interior room or workhorse ability, the Dakota delivers a trimmer package that makes it easier to negotiate congested city traffic and crowded parking lots. Yet the Dakota remains roomier and more potent than its smaller competitors do. The Dakota comes in four distinct trim levels. Each is available with either aft-hinged rear doors – called Extended Cab – or the four conventional doors of the Crew Cab. Most are available with rear-, conventional four-wheel drive or full-time four-wheel drive. Standard is a capable 210-horsepower V6, while an impressive 302-horsepower V8 is available.
Highs: Spry workhorse, great V-8 exhaust note, towing capacity.
Lows: High curb weight offsets the V-8’s power; fuel economy could be better, lots of hard plastic inside the cabin.

Like other Chrysler products, the Dakota is available with the gig entertainment and navigation system. My gig features a 20GB hard drive that can store songs uploaded from a CD or USB flash drive. The system can also display uploaded photos and play DVDs. When available, Sirius Satellite Radio can provide traffic information.
