The Dakota is Dodge’s midsize pickup truck that received a design refresh for 2008 and is offered in Extended Cab and Quad Cab versions. The Dakota debuted as a 1987 model midsize truck and was actually larger than many of its compact competitors, even offering a V8 engine. The Dakota was redesigned for 1997 with exterior styling similar to the full-size Dodge Ram and the third-generation Dakota debuted for 2005.

The 2009 Dakota Extended Cab 4X4 is a 4-door, up to 5-passenger compact pickup, available in three trims, ranging from the ST to the LARAMIE. Upon introduction, both trims are equipped with a standard 3.7-liter, V6, 210-horsepower engine that achieves 15-mpg in the city and 20-mpg on the highway. A 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The 2009 Dakota Extended Cab 4X4 is a carryover from 2008.

The Dakota pickup offers a V8 engine and impressive towing capacity. The 4.7-liter V8 gained more horsepower for 2008 and got a bit smoother. The standard V6 is lackluster. The ride is more compliant than the Chevrolet Colorado and Toyota Tacoma, but it is too buoyant on the highway or with a load in the bed. The Dakota lacks agility, has pronounced body lean, and slow steering. Stability control is not available. Interior quality could be better. Reliability of all versions has been below average. The Mitsubishi Raider is essentially the same truck, but it will be discontinued soon.

Fresh from a complete remake last year, the mid-size Dodge Dakota can no longer be tagged as a "mini-Ram". Dakota buyers disdain today's bulked-up full-sized pickups and demand a leaner exterior. With little compromise in interior room or workhorse ability, the Dakota delivers a trimmer package that makes it easier to negotiate congested city traffic and crowded parking lots. Yet the Dakota remains roomier and more potent than its smaller competitors do. The Dakota comes in four distinct trim levels. Each is available with either aft-hinged rear doors – called Extended Cab – or the four conventional doors of the Crew Cab. Most are available with rear-, conventional four-wheel drive or full-time four-wheel drive. Standard is a capable 210-horsepower V6, while an impressive 302-horsepower V8 is available.
