2008 Dodge Dakota ST Crew Cab pickup 4-door manual

2008 Dodge Dakota ST Crew Cab pickup 4-door manual

The Dodge Dakota looks big. It looks nearly as big and tough as the full-size Dodge Ram. In addition, in fact, it is big. It is the biggest pickup in the midsize class. It is also available with a V8. In addition, its 7,050-pound maximum towing capacity is the best in the class. You might say Dakota is the midsize pickup with a full-size attitude with muscle to back it up.

It is also an easy truck to live with. Getting in is easy, and the interior is comfortable and convenient, with controls that are easy to reach and operate. The rear doors on Extended Cabs and Crew Cabs open wide, and the Crew Cab can accommodate six people. A new under-seat storage system for Crew Cabs provides useful cargo carrying capacity.

ST Crew Cab come standard with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, AM/FM/CD stereo with audio auxiliary jack, tinted rear windows, front disc/rear drum brakes with rear-wheel anti-lock (ABS) and 16-inch steel wheels. Crew Cabs have split-folding rear seats.

2008 Dodge Dakota adds improved performance, better ride quality and innovative utility. With a fresh, new look from the windshield forward, the Dakota incorporates signature Dodge design cues both inside and out, and adds a standard rear tailgate-mounted spoiler. An all-new 4.7-liter V8 engine is available that produces 302 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque—the only optional V8 in the midsize segment. While delivering a 31 percent increase in horsepower and 13 percent increase in torque compared to the previous Dakota V8, the new engine offers a 5 percent increase in fuel economy. Inside, the Dakota features a new instrument panel, center console and accent finishes. The center console incorporates cup holders with modular inserts and a pullout bin for electronics and the Crew Cab offers an innovative collapsible and removable under-seat cargo management system.

According To KBB Editors'

With aggressive new styling, the mid-size 2008 Dodge Dakota can no longer be mistaken for just a small Ram. Dakota buyers disdain today's bulked-up full-sized pickups and demand a leaner exterior. With little compromise in interior room or workhorse ability, the Dakota delivers a trimmer package that makes it easier to negotiate congested city traffic and crowded parking lots. Yet the Dakota remains roomier and more potent than its smaller-than-full-size competitors do. The Dakota comes in six distinct trim levels. Each is available with either aft-hinged rear doors—called Extended Cab—or the four conventional doors of the Crew Cab. All are available with rear-, conventional four-wheel drive or full-time four-wheel drive. Standard is a capable 210-horsepower V6, while an impressive 302-horsepower V8 is available.

Highs: Sprightly handling (for a truck), great V-8 exhaust note, muscular towing capacity.
Lows: High curb weight offsets the V-8's power, lacks innovation compared with the Honda Ridgeline.

Driving Impressions

In comparing the 2008 Dodge Dakota to a typical sedan, a sophisticated driver may notice a small amount of rear-axle ride harshness over uneven pavement. Others may feel the Dakota rides as well as most cars. In addition, with a few hundred pounds loaded in the cargo box, there will be little difference between a current sedan and the Dakota. Steering and braking are predictable in response and feel, and the Dakota owner will likely have no complaints about how it rides smoothly down the road and handles responsively around corners. The optional V8 makes easy the sometimes-challenging task of passing slow-moving traffic on rural two-lane highways.
