The Base model comes standard with a 178-hp, 2.7-liter V6 mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. A 250-hp 3.5-liter V6 come standard on the SXT; a 370-hp 5.7-liter V8 comes on R/T models; and a 425-hp 6.1-liter V8 is exclusive to the SRT8. All-wheel drive is available for Base, SXT and R/T models. Otherwise, rear-wheel drive is standard. Safety features that come standard on all SXT, R/T and SRT8 Charger models include anti-lock brakes, all-speed traction control and electronic stability control with brake assist.

This sedan offers a powerful 5.7-liter Hemi V8, making it quick but returning only 17 mpg overall. The 3.5-liter V6 provides ample performance and returned 19 mpg. The ride is stiff and frequent ride motions make the car feel unsettled. The overly light steering makes the large Charger dirty and demands constant attention, although handling is ultimately secure. The otherwise-roomy rear seat has marginal headroom. A 6.1-liter, V8-equipped SRT8 is also available. IIHS crash-test results were poor when tested without the optional curtain air bags. Reliability of the V6 is average, but it scored too low in testing to be recommended.

The 2009 Dodge Charger is a 4-door, 5-passenger sports sedan with a wide range of trims. Available in SE, SXT, SXT AWD, RT, RT AWD and SRT8, you have the option of a mild-mannered sedan all the way up to a HEMI-powered monster. The SE is powered by a 2.7L V6 with 178 hp mated to a 4-speed automatic. The SXT and SXT AWD are powered by the 3.5L V6 making 250 hp, while the SXT AWD and all upper level trims receive the 5-speed automatic with Auto Stick. The R/T and RT AWD have the 5.7L HEMI V8 that produces 370 hp. The 2009 Dodge Charger SRT8 is at the top of the heap with a 6.1L HEMI V8 pushing out 425 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. New for AWD models for 2009 is the Active Transfer Case with front-axle disconnects which helps improve fuel economy by seamlessly transitioning between RWD and AWD when conditions allow.
