The Dodge Caliber was launched as a 2007 model. For 2008, the high-performance Dodge Caliber SRT4 joins the lineup. The Dodge Caliber is classed as a compact car, though it is larger than the Neon it replaced. A five-passenger, five-door, the Caliber is not easily categorized, combining elements from hatchback, wagon and minivan designs. Though very popular in Europe, hatchbacks, especially five-door hatchbacks, have not caught on in American garages. The five-door hatch is a practical design, but most Americans prefer the styling of a traditional sedan with a separate trunk. Maybe that is changing, however. We certainly like hatchbacks. A choice of four-cylinder engines is available, along with a choice of front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. All-wheel drive makes the Caliber a capable winter vehicle.

The 2009 Caliber is a 4-door, 5-passenger wagon, available in 4 trims, ranging from the SE to the SRT4.The new SRT4 version has a turbocharged engine generating 285 horsepower. With a starting price of $22,435, it is a performance bargain. The mid-level Caliber SXT model with the 2.0-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission is among the more enjoyable of the standard models, but the Caliber is no sports car. For driving excitement, the SRT4 is the choice. The front seats are comfortable, with lots of headroom, and there is a large amount of cargo space here.The 2009 Caliber is a carryover from 2008.
Highs: Big power, enviable power-to-weight ratio, lots of interior space, decent shifter feels.
Lows: Disappointing assembly quality; tall for road demon, even with hunkered-down looks; beefy seats need more back support.
This small four-door hatchback has a raised seating position similar to that of a small SUV. Interior fit and finish is sub par, and the styling impedes visibility, but there are some clever interior storage features. The ride is sound but unexceptional, and handling is lackluster but ultimately secure. The continuously variable transmission works well, but both the 2.0-liter SXT and 2.4-liter AWD R/T we tested lacked punch, and fuel economy was not impressive. Both engines are noisy. Dodge has dropped the AWD model for 2009. There are better hatchbacks available. A quick but crude 285-hp SRT4 is also available.

The 2009 Dodge Caliber SRT4 benefits from this all-inclusive approach with a top-to-bottom overhaul that turns the typically tame Caliber into a tire-spinning, apex-clipping performance machine. All the while, the SRT4 maintains enough comfort and usability to function as a reasonable daily driver.

The 2009 Dodge Caliber SRT4 features a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces a stout 285 horsepower. Many high power front-wheel drive cars suffer from a phenomenon called "torque steer," where the steering wheel pulls to one side or the other under hard acceleration. The front-wheel-drive SRT4 is no exception, requiring a firm grasp of the steering wheel to keep it pointed in the proper direction when the gas pedal is pressed firmly. Power is sent from the engine to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, the only transmission offered for the Caliber SRT4.
