2008 Dodge Avenger SXT sedan 4dr automatic

The Dodge Avenger name returns to the line-up for 2008 to replace the mid-size front-wheel-drive Stratus sedan. With styling similar to a Charger, the Avenger offers many sporty features and standard equipment found in higher class vehicles.
The newest addition to join the Dodge family for 2008 is the Dodge Avenger. This mid-size sedan is available in a SE, SXT, R/T 2WD and R/T AWD. The SE and SXT come equipped with a 2.4L four-speed automatic transmission, whereas the R/T models come powered by a 3.5L V6 six-speed automatic transmission. Standard amenities across the board include keyless remote entry, all power conveniences, and an alarm system. The R/T models add as standard: heated mirrors, Auto stick, and a rear spoiler. Optional features include Connect communication system, moon roof, and the remote control engine start. Safety features on all models include trunk entrapment release, tire pressure monitoring system, dual front airbags, and front and rear side impact airbags.
The 2008 Dodge Avenger is powered by a standard 173-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder World Engine and is mated to a 4-speed automatic transaxle. A flex-fuel 189-horsepower 2.7-liter V6 version and a 235-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 paired with a new 6-speed automatic with Auto Stick are available options. Taking a cue from the Dodge Ram, the Avenger’s center stack has a V-like ram’s horn shape that surrounds the gated shifter bezel and features dual heating and air conditioning vents. The interior features more headroom, shoulder room, hip room in the front seat and drivers sit higher than the previous model. The Avenger offers many unique features including a chilled beverage storage called Chill Zone, housed in the passenger side upper instrument panel with the ability to hold and chill as many as four 12 oz. beverage cans. Other features include a heated/cooled front upholder, YES Essentials Fabric, heated cloth seats, and LED interior lighting in both front and rear seats, MP3 play capability on all audio systems and My GIG information and entertainment system.
The SE and SXT come with the 2.4-liter VVT inline four-cylinder engine. The Set’s performance can be boosted considerably with the optional 2.7-liter V6 engine that will also run on E85 ethanol fuel. Both engines come with four-speed automatic transmissions. The R/T comes with the 3.5-liter V6 engine and a new six-speed overdrive automatic transaxle. The Avenger is front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive will also be available.
Exterior & Styling
All three trim levels have body-colored bumpers. The industry has been moving away from black door handles to the classier body-colored style, and the Avenger sports this look. However, some competitors have gone to all body-colored side mirrors, too, and the SE and SXT have black ones. You can decide for yourself if the color is an issue, but there's a clear disadvantage to the black mirrors in this case: They don't fold. Even if you never fold your side mirrors as a precautionary measure, the hinged variety will give way if you swipe an obstacle — or some other driver bangs mirrors with you. It may mean the difference between a scratch or broken glass and an expensive replacement.
Drive trains
The SE and SXT come standard with a 173-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder but can be upgraded to a 189-hp, 2.7-liter V-6. The Avenger R/T comes standard with a 235-hp, 3.5-liter V-6. The SE and SXT drive the front wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. The R/T has a six-speed with Auto Stick clutch less-manual mode and comes in front- or all-wheel-drive versions. I drove all three engines with front-wheel drive.
Ride & Handling
The SXT had a nice ride quality on many surfaces, and it flattened out and felt very much at home in highway driving. The R/T trim level rides firmer, but it's pretty comfortable in its own right. Even with this tauter suspension, additional stabilizer bar in the rear and lower-series tires (and of course the Road/Track moniker), the Avenger R/T doesn't have the reflexes of a Mazda6 S or a Nissan Altman SE. The structure is solid, but the steering doesn't have a performance feel, and the expected under steer isn't as easy to overcome as it is in the new Altman SE.
Safety
Along with the required frontal airbags, the Avenger has standard side-impact torso-protection bags for the front occupants and side curtain airbags for head protection, front and rear. An electronic stability system is standard on the R/T AWD and optional on the front-drive R/T and the SXT for $425. There is no traction control in Avengers without the stability system.
