2008 Dodge Avenger R/T AWD sedan 4-door automatic

The Avenger is Dodge’s new midsize sedan that debuted in 2007 as a 2008 model. First introduced in the 1995 model year, Avenger at that time was the Dodge player in the sport coupe market that offered a blend of style and performance. The Avenger coupe was discontinued after the 2000 model year but the Avenger name returned as the 2008 Dodge Avenger midsize sedan that builds on the bold, aggressive styling and performance of the Dodge Charger. The exterior is highlighted by Dodge’s signature crosshair grille, large modern quad headlights, muscular rear shoulders, body-color spoiler and chrome-tipped dual exhaust outlets. About 1.2 inches wider and 4 inches taller than its predecessor, the 2008 Avenger has more passenger volume than the previous model. Offered in SE, SXT, R/T and R/T AWD trim levels, the Avenger R/T AWD is also the first midsize car from Dodge to offer AWD combined with a sport-tuned suspension, performance steering and Electric Stability Program (ESP) with Traction Control.

The Dodge Avenger comes in three models the base SE model, the middle SXT version, and the high-performance R/T.

Later in the model year, Avenger will become the first Dodge-brand front-drive car to offer an optional all-wheel-drive system. The AWD, which uses a simple power-takeoff from the six-speed automatic will be fully computerized and capable of delivering up to 95 percent of drive torque to either front or rear wheels. It will be offered only on R/T versions with the 3.5-liter V6 engine.

The 2008 Avenger is a 4-door, 5-passenger family sedan, available in 4 trims, ranging from the SE to the R/T AWD. Upon introduction, the SE is equipped with a standard 2.4-liter, I4, 173-horsepower engine that achieves 21-mpg in the city and 30-mpg on the highway. A 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The R/T AWD is equipped with a standard 3.5-liter, V6, 235-horsepower engine that achieves 15-mpg in the city and 24-mpg on the highway. A 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The 2008 Avenger is all-new for 2008.

According to KBB Editors'
Offering bold, muscle car-like styling combined with a comfortable ride, predictable handling and reasonable fuel economy, the all-new Dodge Avenger is the Dodge Charger of the mid-size sedan segment. Far from a ham-fisted hunk of steel, the Avenger offers an impressive list of comfort and convenience options, such as a navigation system with real-time traffic information and a heated and cooled upholder. The Avenger is also one of the few cars in the segment to offer all-wheel drive.

If you've got a muscle-car mindset but are in the market for the balance offered by a mid-size sedan at an affordable price, the Avenger is the most NASCAR-sequel option out there.

The 2008 Dodge Avenger is powered by a standard 173-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder World Engine and is mated to a 4-speed automatic transaxle. A flex-fuel 189-horsepower 2.7-liter V6 version and a 235-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 paired with a new 6-speed automatic with Auto Stick are available options. Taking a cue from the Dodge Ram, the Avenger’s center stack has a V-like ram’s horn shape that surrounds the gated shifter bezel and features dual heating and air conditioning vents. The interior features more headroom, shoulder room, hip room in the front seat and drivers sit higher than the previous model. The Avenger offers many unique features including a chilled beverage storage called Chill Zone, housed in the passenger side upper instrument panel with the ability to hold and chill as many as four 12 oz. beverage cans. Other features include a heated/cooled front upholder, YES Essentials Fabric, heated cloth seats, and LED interior lighting in both front and rear seats, MP3 play capability on all audio systems and My GIG information and entertainment system.

Exterior & Styling

Front fog lamps and a trunk lid spoiler are standard on the R/T, and both come on the SXT as an option package. The R/T also has dual stainless-steel tailpipes. The SE has 16-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, and the SXT and R/T have 17- and 18-inch alloy wheels, respectively. The SXT can upgrade to the 18-inchers.

Drive Trains

The SE and SXT come standard with a 173-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder but can be upgraded to a 189-hp, 2.7-liter V-6. The Avenger R/T comes standard with a 235-hp, 3.5-liter V-6. The SE and SXT drive the front wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. The R/T has a six-speed with Auto Stick clutch less-manual mode and comes in front- or all-wheel-drive versions. I drove all three engines with front-wheel drive.

Ride & Handling

The R/T trim level rides firmer, but it's pretty comfortable in its own right. Even with this tauter suspension, additional stabilizer bar in the rear and lower-series tires (and of course the Road/Track moniker), the Avenger R/T doesn't have the reflexes of a Mazda6 S or a Nissan Altman SE. The structure is solid, but the steering doesn't have a performance feel, and the expected under steer isn't as easy to overcome as it is in the new Altman SE.

Safety

Along with the required frontal airbags, the Avenger has standard side-impact torso-protection bags for the front occupants and side curtain airbags for head protection, front and rear. An electronic stability system is standard on the R/T AWD and optional on the front-drive R/T and the SXT for $425. There is no traction control in Avengers without the stability system.

Interior

2008 Dodge Avenger R/T Compared to the best interiors in the segment—more and more of which are beginning to mimic the look and feel of a premium sedan's—the Avenger's passenger cabin sends out more of an entry-level vibe. On the other hand, its options list is one of the most sophisticated in the segment, with a hard-drive navigation/entertainment/communication system, rear-seat DVD entertainment system and a heated and cooled upholder. In between the base cloth and available leather seating, the Avenger offers an exceptionally stain-resistant seat fabric called YES Essentials(r). A fold-flat passenger seat doubles as a dinner table or desktop and, combined with the fold-flat rear seats, helps accommodate longer cargo.

Our Favorite Features

This optional hard drive-based system includes navigation with real-time traffic information, MP3/WMA music and JPEG image uploading via a high-speed USB port, auxiliary audio input, voice recognition, voice message recording and playback, Bluetooth(r) hands-free cell phone connectivity and more.

Rear-seat Entertainment

The Avenger's available rear-seat DVD video system—a feature uncommon in the segment—includes dual headphones plus audio and gaming capability.

Our Standard Equipment

A base-equipped Avenger SE includes an AM/FM/CD/CD-MP3 sound system with auxiliary input jack, air conditioning, power windows/locks/mirrors, remote keyless entry, cruise control, four-way adjustable steering wheel, delayed-off headlamps, beverage-cooling upper glove compartment, cloth seats and 16-inch covered steel wheels. Standard safety equipment includes front, front-side and side-curtain airbags, but not anti-lock brakes.

Our Optional Equipment

The highlight of the Avenger's optional equipment list is the comprehensive My GIG(tm) navigation, entertainment and communication system. Other standouts include a six-CD/DVD/MP3/SIRIUS satellite sound system, rear-seat DVD entertainment system, Bluetooth(r) cell phone connectivity, heated and cooled upholder, heated front seats, leather seats and a sun roof.
