The Aspen is Chrysler’s full-size sport-utility vehicle, with a formal design that makes it immediately recognizable as a Chrysler product. Chrysler refers to the Aspen as the 300C of sport-utility vehicles and includes features such as a signature Chrysler grille similar to the 300C, a winged badge, available 20-inch chrome wheels and chrome trim. The Aspen offers seating for up to eight adults and features premium amenities, but is smaller than many of the other full-size SUVs on the market.

Chrysler launches its first truck-type SUV as the 2007 Aspen. It's essentially a ret rimmed Durango from Chrysler's Dodge brand. The two share V8 power trains and seating for up to eight. Standard is a 235-hp 4.7-liter V8, optional is a 335-hp 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with Chrysler's Multi-Displacement System cylinder deactivation. A 5-speed automatic is the only transmission. Aspen is available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Low-range gearing is an AWD option. ABS and an antiskid system with rollover sensors are standard. So are curtain side airbags that cover all three seating rows and include rollover deployment. Options include leather upholstery, DVD entertainment, power lift gate, navigation system and rear obstacle detection. Standard seating is for eight with a 2nd-row bench; optional buckets reduce it to seven.

THE GOOD

THE BAD

Uninspiring materials and mediocre standard tech features let down the interior and the exterior styling draws looks of the wrong kind. The standard engine struggles with the Aspen's bulk and handling and braking are subpart even for a vehicle this size.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Chrysler's hit-or-miss styling misses on the 2007 Aspen, with not enough standard equipment included to entice customers to take the plunge. Factoring in the power deficit and teetering handling, the useful interior starts to look like the only real high point.
