The Dodge Ram 3500 is the one-ton heavy-duty Dodge pickup. The boldly styled Ram replaced the previous Dodge pickup in 1994 and for 1998 the Quad Cab was added. The Ram 1500 was redesigned for 2002 and the heavy-duty Ram was updated for 2003 with styling that distinguishes it from the light-duty truck.

The 2009 Dodge Ram 3500 features the 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel as standard for all trim levels, producing 650 lb-ft of torque and 350 horsepower. A limited slip rear axle is also standard and a 5-speed manual transmission is not available with the optional 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine. Remote start is available with the 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel.
The Ram 3500 has a stiff ride that bounces passengers around. Choosing this heavy-duty work truck over the regular 1500 lets you opt for the 325-hp Cummins 5.9-liter turbo diesel six-cylinder engine. Chrysler's powerful 5.7-liter Hemi V8 is also available. The crew cab's rear seat is tight and upright. If you want capacious rear-cabin room for people and cargo, the 2009 Dodge Ram Mega Cab is your truck. With a limo-like 44.2 inches of rear-seat legroom and 71 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats folded, the Mega Cab is the King of the Hill when it comes to interior space. The 5.7-liter HEMI V8 is upgraded to 355 horsepower and 395 pound-feet of torque. The 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel is now the standard engine on all 3500 models and can now be equipped with remote start.

Chrysler's entrants into this segment, which includes competitors from Chevrolet, GMC and Ford, are the Dodge Ram 3500 pickups. Available in Regular, Quad or Mega Cab configurations, with rear- or four-wheel drive, short or standard bed lengths, shorter or longer wheelbases, single or dual rear wheels, multiple trim levels and HEMI V8 gasoline or Cummins Turbo Diesel power, these ultra-Rams offer everything the basic Ram 1500 pickup does while adding even greater all-around capability.
Exterior
The 3500 lineup carries on with the now-classic Dodge face that matches a prominent "gunfight" crossbar grille surrounded by bold bright work (dark grey on the base ST) with squared-off fenders and wraparound headlamps. Additional shiny bits and chrome wheels are parts of higher trim levels, but no Ram truck includes a locking tailgate. There are two cargo-box lengths, of eight feet with the Regular Cab, six feet, three inches with the Mega Cab and either size for the Quad Cab. The rear doors on Quad and Mega Cab models swing open nearly 90 degrees to facilitate loading and unloading.

Interior
The Mega Cab is huge. Lift up the second-row seat and there's 71 cubic feet of storage space. When folded down, the rear seat can recline up to 37 degrees for passenger comfort. The Quad Cab isn't quite as roomy as competing crew cabs, but it can be ordered with numerous creature comforts. The white-face gauges are easy to read and the controls are conveniently placed. Laramie models are spiced up with wood trim and leather upholstery.

Under the Hood
The Dodge Ram 3500 trucks offer two different engines for two different kinds of customers. Each delivers outstanding performance and is available with a choice of transmissions. Available on nearly all 3500s, this refined, rugged and super-clean diesel develops 350 horsepower with a heady 650 pound-feet of torque at 1500 rpm when backed with its available six-speed automatic or 610 pound-feet at 1400 rpm with the standard six-speed manual transmission.

Driving Impressions
A strong, stiff frame and decently sorted suspension endow the Dodge Ram 3500 trucks with a good basic foundation. The cabin is comfortable and reasonably well isolated and, while the ride on certain road surfaces can get slightly choppy (particularly in an unlade 4x4 model), adding passengers or payload settles things down nicely and is a modest price to pay for the Ram's excellent all-around capabilities.
Safety
Heavy-duty trucks rarely get advanced safety features or additional airbag systems. The Ram 3500 does offer an electronic stability system as an option on all models except the Power Wagon. A stability system is standard on Laramie models.
